BIOGRAPHY
Gary D. Cannon is increasingly in demand as
concert soloist and professional choral singer throughout the Pacific
Northwest. Since 2003 he has been a regular member of
The
Tudor Choir, a professional chamber chorus in Seattle with emphases in
the Renaissance, music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and early
American church music of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He
has performed on three CD releases, including music of Clemens non Papa which
was reviewed glowingly in Gramophone magazine, and a new CD of American
and English music due for release in 2007/8. Additional highlights have
included solo appearances in Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on Christmas Carols,
Ingram Marshall's Savage Altars, and music of Praetorius.
Recent solo performances with major
orchestras and choirs include P.D.Q. Bach's solo
cantata Iphigenia in Brooklyn with the
Seattle Philharmonic, Percy Grainger's
Shallow Brown and Vaughan Williams's Serenade to Music with the Auburn
Symphony, Mozart's Requiem with
the
Rainier Symphony, Vaughan Williams's Fantasia
on Christmas Carols with
The
Tudor Choir, and Respighi's Laud to the
Nativity with Master
Chorus Eastside. Other orchestral appearances
include Gounod's St. Cecilia Mass with the
Eastside Symphony, and music
of Bach and Mozart with the
University of Washington Symphony Orchestra.
Cannon is a frequent member of the vocal faculty at the annual
Midsummer
Musical Retreat in Walla
Walla, Washington, where he has appeared as soloist in Mendelssohn's Die
erste Walpurgisnacht,
and music of Brahms, Corigliano, Walton, and Roupen Shakarian.
As a recitalist, Cannon participated in a benefit faculty recital at
Whatcom
Community College with
soprano Charissa Chiaravalloti in May 2005.
He was featured as a soloist at the inaugural Annas
Bay Music Festival in
summer 2006, singing works of Barber, Copland, and Corigliano. Cannon also appeared in Britten's canticle The Journey of the Magi with countertenor
Doug Fullington and baritone Matthew Melendez Blegen in December 2004. His art song repertoire
ranges from the Romantic Lieder of Schubert and Brahms, to French
mélodies by Fauré, to twentieth-century American and British songs,
especially the works of Barber, Britten, and Walton.
While opera is not his primary expertise, Cannon
is certainly no stranger to the stage. He joined the stage chorus
of
Seattle Opera for its
2007 production of Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer.
In 1999 he premiered the role of Dennis Kearney in
Jerome Rosen's Emperor Norton of the U.S.A. at the
University
of California, Davis. He was the only student with a principal
role in that production. He has also sung in the chorus of the
University of
Washington Opera for Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites. In
addition, he has performed semi-staged scenes and solo arias from Walton's
The Bear, Britten's Peter Grimes, Mozart's Magic Flute,
and Puccini's Madama Butterfly.
In addition to his work with The Tudor Choir and
the Seattle Opera Chorus, he has appeared in professional choirs such as the Cantorei at
St. James Cathedral.
He will also join
The Renaissance Singers
for their fall 2007 concerts.
Under the direction of Joseph Crnko, Cannon has sung
for the soundtracks of various films (Stargate: The Ark of Truth; Exorcist: The Beginning),
television shows (Shrek the
Halls, forthcoming December 2007), film trailers (over two dozen,
including Pirates of the Caribbean III: At the World's End; The
Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Ghost Rider;
Bridge to Taribithia) and video games (including Halo III,
Age of Empires III).
Cannon also appears frequently as
a soloist, section leader, or choral "ringer" for church, community, and recital choruses throughout the
Seattle area, and has also supplemented non-professional ensembles such as
Opus 7,
Seattle Symphony Chorale,
Bellevue Chamber Chorus,
Cantaré, Cascadian Chorale,
Northwest Chorale,
Northwest
Mahler Festival Chorus, and
VocalPoint! Seattle. He has
sung for weddings and funerals throughout the Seattle area, as well as in Napa,
California. As a student, he sang in select ensembles,
often with incidental solos,
at UC Davis
(conducted by Paul Hillier and Jeffrey
Thomas), and the University
of Washington (conducted by Geoffrey Boers and Abraham Kaplan), including
the UW Chamber Singers' acclaimed Baltic tour in 2000. While an
undergraduate, he also supplemented the
Sacramento Ballet Chorus and the Mother Lode Festival Chorus.
Cannon has studied vocal performance
from Julian Patrick at the University of Washington, and at the University of
California, Davis, from Stephanie Friedman, Lenore Turner-Heinson, and Neal
Rogers. He has
also coached undergraduate and community singers.
